Just Dance 2018 is the ninth game in the Just Dance series. The game was revealed at E3 2017 on June 12, 2017. It was released on October 24, 2017, for North America[1] and on October 26, 2017, for Europe, Australia, and Asia. It is the last Just Dance game to be released for the PS3.[2] A PC version was planned, but it was scrapped.

Content descriptors: Lyrics

Other: Online Interactions Not Rated by the ESRB

Rating Summary: This is a rhythm-and-dance simulation game in which players perform choreographed routines by following the movements of on-screen coaches. Players score points by accurately moving their bodies in time to the music and scrolling indicators. Some song lyrics contain suggestive allusions and references (e.g., “I’m feelin’ kind of n-a-s-t-y, I just might take you home with me...I know you want my body”; “I could take you home, we could keep it on the low;" “If you wanna menage, I got a tricycle”). One song contains allusions to substance abuse (e.g., “I’m strung out on John Wayne, baby let’s get high John Wayne...Love junkie, on a three-day bender”).

Reception[]

Just Dance 2018 received a Metascore of 75/100 on the PlayStation 4[7] and 71/100 on Nintendo Switch.[8]

Trivia[]

  • Just Dance 2018 now marks the second time the crown icon which denotes which player in a multiplayer match is in the lead has been changed since the introduction of the feature in Just Dance 2 and the crown change in Just Dance 2014. Instead of a rendered three-dimensional crown, the icon is now a flat white two-dimensional icon inside of a bubble of the same color as the player currently in the lead with a white outline around the bubble.
    • However, the 7th generation versions of the game retain the original crown design.
  • Just Dance 2018 marks the first time where Ubisoft Club/Uplay rewards are not available on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Wii U.
    • Logging into Ubisoft Club is still possible in the Wii U version but however, players cannot complete actions to earn Units and XP, nor can they receive any rewards except Thumbs, which is unlocked by simply logging into Ubisoft Club.
    • Just Dance 2018 also marks the first game where the Switch version can log into Ubisoft Club.
  • Just Dance 2018’s pictograms have an effect where they will beat in time with the song on every other beat (as opposed to the pictogram bar, which still beats on every beat) on 8th generation consoles and the Switch.
  • Just Dance 2018 marks the first time the pictograms have shadows, but only on 8th generation consoles and the Switch.
  • Just Dance 2018 marks the second game since Just Dance 2 to not have any mashups. The first was the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions of Just Dance 2017.
    • However, Just Dance 2018 doesn't have any mashups on all consoles, unlike Just Dance 2017.
    • This would happen with later games.
  • Just Dance 2018 is the third game to have Just Dance Unlimited.
  • Just Dance 2018 had a "May contain content inappropriate for children" warning on its original RP (Rating Pending) ESRB label.[9]
    • This was removed when the official rating of E10+ was assigned.
  • Just Dance 2018 was the last game in the Just Dance series to have Miiverse support on the Wii U, though only for a short time due to the closure of the Miiverse service on November 7, 2017.[10]
  • Just Dance 2018 features three artists (Jamiroquai, Boney M., and Marine Band) who jointly hold the record for the second-longest gap between appearances in the main series.
  • The songs Automaton, Bubble Pop!, and The Way I Are (Dance With Somebody) were played during the presentation of the game at E3, with Bebe Rexha present in-person to sing The Way I Are (Dance With Somebody).
  • During the E3 presentation, dancers wearing the following costumes appeared:
  • The preview videos for these songs contain pictogram errors wherein, during the fading phase of the pictogram, they are replaced by a random pictogram from the same song:
  • The preview gameplay videos of the songs unveiled at E3 feature videos showing different parts of the song when comparing the official US and UK channels. For example, Automaton shows the first chorus and the second verse on the US account, but it shows the second chorus and the bridge on the UK one.
    • However, some song previews show the same part with additional parts on either version, such as Rockabye and How Far I’ll Go.
  • Several coaches from Just Dance 2017 and Just Dance Unlimited appear in the announcement banner.
  • Just Dance 2018 is the fourth game in the series in which the menu icons are cropped from squares into another shape, in this case, super-ellipses.
    • The first one was Just Dance 2, the second was Just Dance 3 (both of which cropped squares into circles) and the third was the Wii, Wii U, and PS3 versions of Just Dance 4 (which cropped squares into D shapes).
  • Lyrics appear slightly different than previous games - a diagonal line protrudes from the bottom edge of the screen and the lyrics follow the contour of that line when they scroll up.
    • Also, when a gray line scrolls up from the "next line" line and begins highlighting, the gray line that replaces it will "swoop in" from the bottom of the screen, similarly to Just Dance Now.
    • The diagonal line disappears when lyrics aren't shown and reappears when lyrics will be shown, yet sometimes the line will remain there for a short period of time when some lyrics have a short time gap.
    • 7th generation versions of the game do not have the diagonal line and keep the original lyric style.
  • Menu icons are much more zoomed in on the coaches than in previous games.
  • The titles for the UK previews of Footloose, John Wayne, and Kissing Strangers contain the word "[OFFICIEL]" (the French word for "official") instead of its English counterpart.[11]
  • Just Dance 2018 marks the second time that an artist, in this case, Nicki Minaj, has 3 songs in the same game included on the disc. The first time was the Best Buy edition of Just Dance 3, where the artist with three songs was Katy Perry.
  • Just Dance 2018 marks the first time in the Just Dance series that the Ubisoft logo has changed. The new Ubisoft logo (also known as "The New UbiSwirl") was initially shown to the public on the UbiBlog on May 31, 2017. The logo animation movie was shown for the first time in Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle. The logo animation movie can also be animated in 60fps, in which that version was first shown in South Park: The Fractured But Whole. A modified jingle was later added to both the 30fps and 60fps versions, starting with the Bring the Crunch DLC release in South Park: The Fractured But Whole.[12]
  • On Nintendo Switch, the Joy-Cons vibrate to the rhythm of music even outside of Double Rumble routines. This feature is called "Beat Vibrations" and only works with Just Dance 2018 songs.[13]
  • Just Dance 2018 is the first game since Just Dance 2014 to have multiple on-disc alternates for the same song. Waka Waka (This Time for Africa) has a Kids Mode alternate routine and a Quartet alternate routine.
  • Just Dance 2018 is the first game since Just Dance 2 to not feature any song from The Black Eyed Peas or any of its members.
  • The Gold Move effect is similar to Just Dance 2017 but it has fewer particles and a red glow effect.
    • In the preview video of Me Too on Just Dance Now, the full Gold Move effect uses a similar red glow effect.
    • Starting with Just Dance 2020, the Gold Move effect was modified while keeping the red glow effect.
    • 7th generation console version of the game uses the Gold Move effect that has been the norm since Just Dance 2015 since all art assets are recycled from that said game.
  • Pre-ordering the game from the PlayStation Store on the PlayStation 4 granted people access to the following PlayStation Network avatars as their avatar:[14]
  • Just like the previous three games, Just Dance 2018 has messages that present themselves when an alternate routine is unlocked, exclusively on seventh-gen consoles. Here are the messages attributed to each routine, in order of when they are unlocked:
    • Waka Waka (This Time for Africa) - Straight to the goal!
    • Dharma - Face your opponent!
    • Automaton - Ketchup or mustard?
    • Chantaje - You’ve got a ticket to ride!
    • Bubble Pop! - You'll be stuck in the sound...
    • Side to Side - Work out like a diva!
    • Kissing Strangers - Put on your dancing shoes!
    • Another One Bites the Dust - Be a real action hero!
    • 24K Magic - Be as good as gold...
    • Tumbum - Warm up the place!
    • Despacito - Ready for some Latin vibes?
    • John Wayne - Welcome to the Far West!
  • The boss "Garylou" is a play on the word "garou" (which means "werewolf" in French).
  • The new score rating "SUPER" originally appeared in Just Dance 3’s Just Create mode, in place of "PERFECT". However, the sprite of the "SUPER" and "PERFECT" ratings are larger in the 7th generation console versions, with the later rating being larger than the original sprite in Just Dance 2015.
  • The lyrics are now hidden when the in-game HUD is hidden (except for the pictogram bar, which is now shown when it's hidden) during the first and last few seconds on some songs from Just Dance 2015 (first few seconds of some songs only) to Just Dance 2017.
  • Just Dance 2018 is the third game in the series with avatars that cannot be earned simply by completing a routine.
  • Just Dance 2018 is the seventh game in the series to be nominated for Favorite Video Game at the Kids Choice Awards.
  • Leftovers of songs from Just Dance 2018 can be found in the 7th-Gen files of Just Dance 2019.[15]
  • Just Dance 2018 is the last Just Dance game to be released on PS3.
    • This is also the last game in the series to have all of Just Dance 2015's online features on 7th-Gen consoles. This includes the World Dance Floor, the Just Dance Wall, Challenge Mode, and Autodance sharing.
      • This is because of the shutdown announcement of online features for all Just Dance games from 2014 to this game, except for 8th Gen versions of 2016, 2017, and this game, which happened on November 19, 2018.[16]
  • Just Dance 2018 is playable on the Nintendo Switch Lite, but normal Joy-Cons are required to play.
    • This also applies to other games in the series available on the Nintendo Switch.
  • Just Dance 2018 is the third game to have unique menu colors per map, after Just Dance 4 (on all consoles except Xbox 360) and Just Dance 2017 (excluding 7th-gen consoles). It has default menu colors for if a map's files is missing them. They are:
