Just Dance 4 is a dance/rhythm game developed and published by Ubisoft. It is the fourth installment in the series and the first to be released on the Wii U. The game was released on October 2, 2012, with the Wii U version being released on November 18, 2012 as a launch title.
Gameplay
Players are judged on their ability to mimic dance moves performed by on-screen dancers. Players can choose the song they dance to and the score is kept depending on the number of accurate timings and movements.
New features and modes in Just Dance 4 include a Battle Mode, an expanded Just Sweat mode, and bonus routines that must be unlocked through the Wheel of Gifts. Players can also unlock Dance Quests, with each song having up to six missions that can be completed by completing specific tasks (such as playing a Duet routine with two players or earning a "GOOD" during a specific part of the song).
Players can also create Dancer Cards, which display their most frequently played songs, their highest scores, and online and offline challenges. Online leaderboards are available for the Wii U, PS3, and Xbox 360 versions of the game.
Routines also have notable differences compared to those of the previous games, as coaches have a more realistic look and their colors no longer have gradients. Backgrounds are also more detailed and animated, unlike the simple backgrounds used in previous games.
Special Editions
Just Dance 4 Special Edition
There is a special edition of the game which only adds one song; Umbrella by Rihanna, as well as an Alternate Version to the song, can be unlocked in-game. However, the Special Edition is only for the PAL Wii due to Umbrella being on the default track list for all other consoles.
Wii U Version
The Wii U version of Just Dance 4 has its special additions and features as well as having the most exclusive Mashups. For the first time in the series, a game mode can support up to 5 players at once. Puppet Master Mode allows four players to dance on-screen at once, while the fifth player uses the Wii U Gamepad and becomes the Master of Ceremonies. The MC can switch dance routines in real-time. The other four players must perform the moves decided by the MC.
The Wii U operator also can create custom choreographies on Puppet Master Modes and choose the next song. The Wii U controller allows light painting, which can be used for writing/drawing things on the screen for the other 4 players. It is also possible to display the lyrics on the Gamepad.
Also, 3 exclusive songs are included, Ain’t No Other Man, Domino and Want U Back in the Wii U version of the game. Want U Back is available as a downloadable track on the other three consoles.

Menu and Design
Wii/Wii U/PS3
The menu starts with a purple background with circles. In the middle, “JUST DANCE 4” is spelled in a bold white font, in all caps, with the 4 being surrounded by a purple star. On the PS3, players will be asked to do a calibration. If the calibration is successful, the game will show how to hold the motion controller. On the Wii U, the starting menu has a crowd at the bottom of the screen, with most of the coaches in the game being displayed in the middle. The game logo is still visible. When opening the menu, on the left, there is a purple side with most of the in-game coaches and behind them is a light. Underneath them is a message reading “JUST DANCE” in all caps and white letters on a purple box. Underneath that is another message reading “Let the party begin!”. When selecting it with the cursor, the coaches zoom in and the box swaps colors with the message. On the right is a blue side with all of the coaches from the Just Sweat mode, with a blue light behind them. Underneath them is a message reading “JUST SWEAT” in all caps and white letters on a blue box. Underneath that is a message reading “Your personal dance workout”. When selecting it with the cursor, the coaches zoom in and the box swaps colors with the message. Below is a red box and on the right of it, “EXTRAS” is displayed in white letters and all caps. Next to it are a screwdriver, a hammer, a light bulb, and an SD card. On the right is a blue box that on the left reads “STORE” in white letters and all caps. Next to it is a globe. The menu is a purple background with the menu squares being placed sideways. When the song plays, the background changes colors. On the bottom right is the Mojo bar, and on the top left is the back to menu button. There are also messages that replace the Mojo bar featuring information about the game. On the Just Sweat menu, it is pretty similar, but with a blue background.
Xbox 360
When the game starts, there is a tyrian purple box on the left, spelling “JUST DANCE 4” in all caps and white letters. There are wavy lines that are purple, yellow and blue, which look similar to the ones from Disturbia; indeed, in the middle is a box with only its outline visible that depicts the coach from that routine in the middle raising her right hand, albeit with more spikes on her shoulders. Underneath the box, “Raise your hand to take control” is shown in white letters. There is a red box below with only its outline being visible that appears in all parts of the menu. In the middle, it reads “Raise hand!” in white letters. When the player does so, their silhouette appears in the box. When proceeding to the next step, there is an information box on the left side of the screen. At the top, it reads “GET THE PARTY STARTED!” in all caps and white letters. The box has four instructions in a bulleted list in white letters.
- Don’t stand too close to the Kinect sensor
- In menus, relax and use smaller, gentle motions
- Select songs just like on your favorite touch screen device
- You can use a Controller if you prefer, press any button!
In the middle is a purple box with the outline of a hand that is drawn with white dots. Underneath, it spells “Touch to continue” in white letters. When selected, there are two yellow lines that glow around it, with the box also glowing a yellow outline. This is the same for all the other squares in the menu except for the covers which are also known as icons. On the right, there is a GIF of a pictogram showing you a tutorial how to use your hand to select things. Just like all games that are on the Xbox 360, there is an option to choose a profile. At the top is a tyrian purple box that has a message saying “Welcome to Just Dance 4!” in white letters and underlined. Underneath, “Select a Profile Option” appears in yellow letters. There are five squares with profiles on them. The first square reads “Change Profile” in black letters. On the bottom right is a purple box with an option to be a guest. There are four squares with icons on them. The first square is the extras with tool symbols on them; the second one is Just Sweat with a sweat drop with a heart monitor in the middle; the third one is Just DanceTV with a purple box with only its outline visible. Inside, it reads “JDTV” with the first half being purple letters and the other half being pink letters. There is also a pink Wi-Fi symbol next to it. The fourth square is Just Dance, where the songs are playable. It has a purple silhouette of P1 of Hot Stuff. Instead of six squares visible at once in the Just Dance menu, only five are visible. All songs are listed in a straight line. On the bottom left, there is a box that brings you back to the menu. Just like other consoles, the background is blue in Just Sweat.

Rating Summary: This is a rhythm-and-dance simulation game in which players perform choreographed routines by following the movements of on-screen characters. Players score points by accurately moving their bodies in time with the music and scrolling indicators. Some songs include suggestive material (e.g., “Temptress, hands up, naughty on the inside,” “That badonkadonk is like a trunk full of bass on an old school Chevy,” “Take me by the tongue . . . Kiss me 'til you're drunk,” “Hey, sexy boy, set me free/Don't be shy, play with me/My dirty boy, can't you see”). Some lyrics also reference alcohol (e.g., “All I need is some vodka . . .” and “She never drinks the water/Makes you order French champagne”). In one comical dance sequence, a cartoony character (a rabbid) removes its tight shorts (no nudity is depicted).

- The Wii version of Just Dance 4 is the last game in the series to run at 60FPS on that console. All the following games run at 30FPS on the Wii.
- Just Dance 4 is the first game in the series where the "On Fire" feature is not visually indicated. However, it is present behind the scenes in both this game and every following game.[3]
- Just Dance 4 is the first game in the main series where lyrics are highlighted on all consoles. The highlighting color is usually the same as the coach’s glove or the pictograms.
- This is the second game in the franchise to not highlight lyrics after the singing person’s gender, like in Just Dance 3 (PS3), Just Dance Wii, and Just Dance Wii 2. It is preceded by ABBA: You Can Dance.
- Just Dance 4 is the only game in the series where no Mashup has Gold Moves.
- Just Dance 4 is the first game in the series to have Battle Mode. It would appear for the second and last time in Just Dance 2014.

- The exemplary images in the DLC instruction manual show songs that were never made available for purchase in the game, like Alright, Katti Kalandal and Brand New Start. The first two were DLC in the previous game, whereas the latter is a code unlockable in this one.
- Curiously, the Brand New Start cover in the DLC instruction manual uses the menu icon for Jungle Drum (except on the Xbox 360 version of the manual, where the menu icon of Kids in America is used instead[citation needed]).
- On the PlayStation 3 version, if there is DLC downloaded to the system, the scores will not be displayed next to the dancer(s) like in the other consoles. They have to be seen through the leaderboard.
- The effort ratings were removed in this game, and they have been absent from every game in the main series up until Just Dance 2019.
- On the NTSC box art, Umbrella and Moves Like Jagger have different color schemes, but Umbrella’s color scheme is from the bridge when she turns golden, whereas Moves Like Jagger’s is completely different.
- On the PAL box art, Mr. Saxobeat has different color schemes.
- On the Italian cover of the game Cercavo Amore is listed in place of Moves Like Jagger, which is listed on all other PAL covers.
- There are 33 total Mashups in the game. However, only the Wii U version holds all of them. The Wii and Xbox 360 versions have only 12 of them each, and the PS3 version has 24 of them.
- A thirty-fourth Mashup (Istanbul (Not Constantinople)’s Mashup) was planned to be in the game but got cut.
- On the Wii U version of the game, there is a notification that will appear at the bottom-right corner of the song list saying that there are 64 Mojo levels. However, there are only 62 gifts on the Wii U version.
- On the rest of the consoles, its maximum level is 33.
- On Wii, PS3, and Wii U, the song selection menu is sometimes affected by a glitch that causes two random menu icons to overlap each other.[4][5]
- Light painting and karaoke are not available while playing Puppet Master Modes.
- The game files contain a video of various people from the development team dancing randomly and wearing various costume accessories. This video is formatted like other coach videos in the files.
- On the title screen in the Xbox 360 version, the coach from Disturbia shows the pose that the player has to do (by raising his or her hand) to activate the menu control.
- You're the First, the Last, My Everything plays during the Credits.
- If the player continues the song after pausing, it will go on to the countdown starting with 3. The speed depends on the BPM of the song.
- The countdown was also used in Just Dance Wii 2, but with the countdown starting at 4 in both normal gameplay and Dance Dojo.
- The Wii U version’s menu has a different Back button and loading icon.
- The NTSC PlayStation 3 box art says "Only On PlayStation", despite the game being multi-platform.
- This is likely considered that the PS Move support is exclusive to PS3.
- The game was supposed to have Medley, but it was removed for unknown reasons.[6]
- The Gold Move sound is not played on Wii Remotes; instead, they vibrate when a player correctly does a Gold Move.
- The lyrics are closer to the edge on the Wii.
- Starting with this game, the lyric lines are generally longer than in previous games.
- The Xbox 360 version of the game does not have a crown above the leader’s name. Instead, the leader will have gold arcs below their name and Kinect silhouette.
