Just Dance VR (also subtitled Welcome to Dancity) is a virtual reality game that was released on October 15, 2024, for the Meta Quest 2, 3, 3S, and Pro headsets.[2][3]

The game is the third attempt at a VR adaptation of the Just Dance series, following an unreleased prototype for a VR version of Just Dance 2017 shown at E3 2016[4] and a subsequent planned 2023 release for the Pico 4 headset that was ultimately scrapped and reworked into the Meta version.[3]

Gameplay and Features[]

The gameplay of Just Dance VR is similar to that of previous Just Dance games, where the player must mimic the Coach's movements to score points. In this game, the backgrounds for each routine are transformed into 360-degree VR environments, although the dancers and pictograms are still rendered as 2D objects within the 3D space with a star bar layout similar to Michael Jackson: The Experience. Notably, the game uses the controllers in both hands (rather than just one) to score moves, a feature previously only seen in the Double Rumble game mode and the XBOX consoles with Kinect enabled/connected to the console, which you use your whole body. The game appears to use a very similar scoring system to that of the Just Dance service.

Locations[]

Outside of gameplay, the game has two main locations: Dancity and the player's apartment. Dancity is the game's social hub, where other online players can be found. It contains several displays that show the covers for different routines; hovering the cursor over one plays a video preview, and selecting it will start that song. The apartment contains a display with a more straightforward song selection menu, as well as a basketball mini-game and a shelf with the player's earned Superstar and Megastar trophies. The apartment cannot be customized.

Randomly selected tracks from the game's song list are used as the background music in both main locations.

Multiplayer and Online Features[]

Just Dance VR allows the player to customize a VR avatar that will be visible to other players, as well as a profile similar to those of the Just Dance service. Other players' profiles can be viewed by selecting a button that appears when hovering the cursor over their avatar, or by selecting their name on a leaderboard. Players who are "following" each other can also send and receive group invites.

Up to six players can be in a group. Regardless of location, players who are in the same group will always be prompted to enter a song together when a group member chooses one, and will be able to use native voice chat. Players who are not in the same group cannot voice chat with each other, but can alternatively communicate via emotes, which are accessed by pressing in on a controller thumbstick.

When connected, the apartment song select will display a portion of the global score leaderboard for each song. Dancity further displays each song's highest score of the day and the player who earned it. It also features a "song of the week", which rotates every seven days and has its own leaderboard.

A persistent Internet connection is required for all multiplayer and leaderboard features, but single-player mode remains otherwise functional while offline.

Development[]

The VR game was first announced in September 2022, where it was planned to be released in 2023 as a collaboration with Pico as an exclusive for the Pico 4 headset.[3] However, throughout 2023, Just Dance VR’s status became uncertain following layoffs at ByteDance, Pico’s parent company, and poor sales performance of the Pico 4 headset.[5][6] In November 2023, it was revealed to VR gaming news site UploadVR via email that Ubisoft is "working with a new partner for Just Dance VR", with further details such as release dates to be revealed at a later time.[7] It would later be revealed at Ubisoft Forward on June 10, 2024, as a Meta Quest exclusive.

This is a music-rhythm dancing game in which players perform choreographed routines by following the movements of on-screen characters. Players score points by accurately dancing in time to the music and scrolling indicators. One song contains brief alcohol references (e.g., “Have a drink clink/Found the Bud Light”; “The Patrón own let's go get it on”).

Trivia[]

  • The VR prototype of Just Dance 2017 was played by Australian Just Dance YouTuber Jayden Rodriguez at E3 2016, but it was never released, and no further developments were made until the announcement of the Pico port.
  • On the official website for the Pico VR system, the file name of the promotional image for Just Dance 2023 Edition is misspelled as "jest-dance.png".[8]
  • A variation of the Gold Move effect used from Just Dance 2020 to Just Dance 2022 is used in the game.
    • However, it uses the same Gold Move sound from Just Dance 2023 Edition onwards, since it shares UI elements as the aforementioned game.
  • Just Dance VR shares the same release date as Just Dance 2025 Edition.
  • Stop This Fire is used as background music for the game’s reveal trailer.
  • All trios are converted to solos, resulting in the game only having solos and having no coach selection screen.
    • Excluding spin-offs, it is the second game with only solos in the game, after Just Dance.
  • Despite not being in the game, a cover for Chacarron can be seen in Dancity as a banner.[9]
  • 'Just Dance VR' is the first game to use masked extractions in its routines since the on-disc Mashups in Just Dance 2017 on the Wii, Xbox One, PS4, Switch and PC.
    • However, unlike past Just Dance games, prior to Just Dance 2015, in which backgrounds for some songs are rendered in-game instead of being pre-rendered in later Just Dance games, starting from Just Dance 2016, backgrounds are rendered in 3D within a 360° viewing space, using the Unity engine, the same engine used in recent Just Dance games, starting from Just Dance 2023 Edition.
  • The trophies shown are full 3D renders of Pictograms of moves of particular songs.
  • The 3D avatar creation system uses the Ready Player Me avatar and character creation tool. Furthermore, it also uses full-body XR support, which was in public beta upon release.
